Grief & Joy While running

“People often tell you to “stay strong” through difficult times in life. When I had my share of grief and loss, I had no idea how I could possibly find this strength. I was in full flight, fight or freeze mode and ‘running’ the longest race of my  life. Everything in  me were on a back burner…my physical and mental self were all too consumed by grief.

I saw a Running Evolution postcard at a running store and was intrigued by it and decided to check it out. When I first started running with Beth, 9 months after my loss, I was still very troubled by it and life was still very much “one foot in front of the other.” Running and the conversations happening while running helped clear my mind, for a few minutes at a time and I got to the point where I could not think of anything else other than running. By the end of the training, I discovered that running can be that strength for me. Putting one foot in front of the other and realizing that same feeling in life will not last forever. I felt stronger, physically and mentally; strong enough to recognize and figure out who I really am and what I am made of especially in the circumstance I was in then. It was the ultimate therapy for me.

Through several runs with Beth, I have come to realize that a run of any kind has a finish line and a goal. It is a goal of time, health, pride, joy and confidence. It is a goal that took me several months in the making; a result of training, experiencing pain and pushing beyond limits. It is a place of hope, where I came out of a rut, improved my physical quality of life and wellbeing and discovered a happier, newer self I didn’t know could exist. It is also a place of defiance and coming out strong when everything else seemed impossible. Last but not the least, a finish line is a place of support. The care, love, encouragement and tremendous support I received from Beth and all my fellow trainers, now friends cannot be quantified or taken for granted. I am moved to tears just thinking about the amazing run journey and the many hundreds of miles I have added with each and every one of you at Running Evolution.”

This is Norah, Cammy’s very sweet and fast 7 year old.

Why 13.1 Miles? Half Marathon Training.

Maybe you are looking for a challenge. You want to see what you are made of. You want to get out of your comfort zone. See what that body is made of and see if you mind can keep up.

Maybe. It’s more.


The half group is about testing limits of what your mind and body can do. And it can do it. But it’s also SO much more. There is this beautiful community that is made and cemented with long runs, where you really get to know someone. You make connections and week by week, you surprise yourself.


This is why I love my job. Seeing people evolve. Experiencing the love of running through others eyes time and time again.

“Beth is my running hero and inspiration!  Before meeting Beth, I found it a struggle to run a mile nonstop, and never even contemplated a half marathon.  I signed up for the program thinking I would just stick with it as long as I could and was shocked to find how much I enjoyed it!  It was an amazing group, full of encouragement, tips, and laughter, and Beth and the other coaches kept the long runs fun and interesting.  After finishing, I ran my first half-marathon with ease and completed my first full marathon six months later.  I can’t imagine having come even close to that far without Beth’s support and positive energy and the camaraderie of the group.” – Linda
